In a totally pedestrian city like Venice, the only reason to have a car is to explore far beyond the city. Rental cars have to be parked at a garage on the perimeter of the city. In high season, when parking garages are full, it can be difficult to find a spot to park your car. Parking lots and car rental agencies are located at the Piazzale Roma, across the Grand Canale from the train station.
To get the best price, reserve a car before leaving home. Ask for an all-inclusive rate including full insurance and unlimited kilometers. Many of the less expensive rental cars in Europe will have neither air conditioning nor roll-down windows. To get the best deal, shop around, reserve ahead of time and pay in advance.
Most agencies only require a valid driver license and one year of driving experience. The minimum age to rent is 21. However, many agencies will not rent to anyone under 23. Renters under 25 often pay a surcharge.
Italy also has an unavoidable 20% government value-added tax referred to as 'IVA,' which is usually part of the quoted price. The government also charges an airport tax for cars picked up at one of the airports. The 12% extra makes picking up a car at another location attractive.
