Situated on a quiet street near the University of Florence and Palazzo Pandolfini, the Antica Dimora is a B&B. As part of the Johanna Vitta four-hotel empire (see also B&B Johanna I), Antica Dimora maintains a charming, boutique feel, with just six deluxe double rooms. Rates are a little on the high end of the Cheapo spectrum, but worth paying for the “luxe” digs and delicious breakfast that is included.

Rooms, each more beautiful than the last, offer four-poster beds, fine silk curtains, plush bedding and tasteful detailing and artwork. Fresh flowers and soft lighting add a calming feel. Each room comes with a telephone, minibar, satellite television, safe deposit box and free Wi-Fi. They all have air conditioning too.

Bathrooms are divine, with Carrara marble or oil-painted walls and original antique appliances in fine porcelain with intricate detailing. The miniature balconies off some of the rooms, with their views of the surrounding domes and rooftops, left our mouths gaping.

Three larger suites have living rooms and sofa beds and are akin to fantasy Paris apartments.

Don't sleep in too late or you will miss breakfast, a lovely spread that makes staying here very special.

Location: Very central

1.4km to city center

North of the Duomo, and home to the Accademia Gallery and David, parts of this area are flooded with tourists and tourist cuisine. As you head north, however, the streets widen out a bit, and there's a much more residential feel to the area.

Florence's university is also located nearby, which explains the few hipster-inspired bars, shops and restaurants dotting the 'hood. You're most likely to find peace and quiet in the northern part of San Marco.

Choosing a hotel in San Marco makes sense if you're looking for a quieter, more peaceful (and less touristy) sleeping experience. You might have to walk 10-15 minutes to get to the center of town, but you might find that the walk is worth it.
