Located in an attractive Upper East Side neighborhood not far from Museum Mile, this hostel couples austere brownstone surroundings with Cheapo-friendly prices. The premises are simple, but the staff has managed to infuse the space with a considerable amount of character.
The dorm rooms are functional if not cheery, outfitted with standard metal bunks and lockers (bring your own padlock). The ceilings are high and most dorms have an interior shared bathroom to cut down on lines. Rooms without interior facilities have sinks and mirrors.
Private rooms are crisp and clean. They also have an en suite toilet, but the shower—a sort of frosted glass pod—is adjacent to the bath, inside the main room. Comfortable with your roommate? Hope so!
If the rooms are somewhat lackluster, the communal facilities compensate. The exposed brick common room and kitchen is spacious and well equipped and has a large dining table perfect for making travel buddies over free breakfast. Light comes in from the garden, which is surrounded by a lattice fence and more verdant than most hotel courtyards we've seen in the city.
